Two Alabama teens were arrested on Tuesday after reportedly beheading three stray puppies with a machete and posting a video of it on social media.
Police were first alerted to the footage when a caller informed an officer of the video on Snapchat. Because Snapchat deletes postings after they’re viewed, investigators have not been able to see the posting.
Ashley Johnston and his 17-year-old friend, whose name wasn’t released because of his age, face misdemeanor animal cruelty charges, according to Sheriff Earnest Evans. Johnston reportedly used his cell phone to record his friend throwing puppies in the air and killing them with a machete in Wilcox County.
"It would be fair to say the 18-year-old confessed. He kind of owned it, took the photos, and he actually didn't like it,” Evans said. “The pictures were on social media for about 15 seconds.”
Johnston seemed remorseful for his actions and became emotional during his confession, according to Evans. The investigator noted that both suspects were “just two kids being stupid” when they committed the act.
Johnston is reportedly an Eagle Scout and both suspects make good grades.
