Florida Teen Who Shot Her Brother Was Molested For Years By Her Uncle

The 15-year-old who allegedly shot and killed her older brother Damien Kornegay had been sexually, physically and mentally abused for years. According to documents obtained by police, the girl had been sexually abused by her uncle multiple times and was caught having sex with her older brother. She was also periodically locked in her room when she misbehaved.

Kornegay, whose first name is not being released, shot her brother in the back of the neck in rural Florida. Damien had locked her in her room while their parents were away. She managed to persuade her 11-year-old sister to unlock her door. She then went outside and climbed back into her parents’ room, where she loaded a handgun and shot her brother in the back of the neck. Both girls then fled the scene. They were discovered at a Dollar General parking lot after the younger girl called a friend.

Documents show that Kornegay endured years of sexual abuse from an uncle, who filmed her giving him oral sex multiple times. He was arrested and convicted of molesting her in 2010 after his wife found the videos. Additionally, her mother caught her having sex with her older brother. The mother claims that Kornegay said she did not want to have sex with him. Kornegay’s mother, Misty, admits that they periodically locked their daughter up when she misbehaved. The parents locked her in her room for up to 20 days, with only a blanket and a bucket to be used as a toilet. Police said they discovered a bucket filled with urine in her closet.

Police also reported, “It was learned that (the 15-year-old girl) has made past attempts at ending her life but neither law enforcement nor (emergency management services) was notified.” Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said: “It's hard for us to get our arms around this act. This is the stuff nightmares are made of.”

Both sisters are being held in juvenile detention for the murder accusations. Prosecutors are deliberating whether they should be tried as adults. Both parents have been charged with child neglect and failing to supervise with bail set at $20,000. Their youngest child, a 3-year-old, is with child welfare officials.
