A young man from Ingham County, Michigan, has decided to give most of his hundreds of thousands in lottery winnings to his parents.
The 19-year-old, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the winning Golden Wild Time lottery scratcher from a Sunoco gas station in Williamston, Michigan. He won $500,000, the card's top prize amount.
“I stopped at the Sunoco for gas after giving a buddy of mine a ride and they had one Golden Wild Time ticket left, so I bought it,” he told Michigan Lottery. “I scratched off in the store and at first I thought they were playing a trick on me until I saw how excited they were about the ticket.”
He made the decision to give his parents the majority of the winnings to thank them for their support.
“I’m going to keep about $5,000 for myself to invest, and I’m going to give the rest to my parents,” he said. “My parents have done so much for my sister and me, helping them takes a big weight off of their shoulders and mine.”
The winning player claimed his winnings from the lottery's headquarters on March 17.
“It’s just incredible, I can’t get the smile off of my face," the young man said.
In September 2016, a woman in Lansing, Michigan, also won the $500,000 prize from a Golden Wild Time scratcher.
"I don't always buy scratch offs, but when I saw the ticket was the ninth one on the roll, I had to buy it," the woman, who chose to remain anonymous, said at the time, according to MLive. "Nine has always been a lucky number for me, but this is the biggest payoff I've gotten from it yet!"
The number nine proved lucky twice, since it was also the winning number that won her $500,000.
"When I saw the $500,000 prize I was stunned," she said. "I stayed quiet in the store while my husband came to meet me there and follow me home."
The woman did not say how she planned to spend her winnings.
Players of the Golden Wild Time scratcher have won more than $28.5 million since its launch in August 2016, according to Michigan Lottery. In 2016, lottery players won $817 million.
The $10 ticket has prizes that range from $10 up to $500,000. There are still more than $18.5 million in prizes yet to be won, including 45 $10,000 prizes, and 89 $1,000 prizes.
