Police Arrest Teen In Florida High School Sex Scandal

A high school football player in Florida has been arrested for his involvement with a 15-year-old girl, who was a victim of sex trafficking by allegedly having sex with multiple boys in a school bathroom.

The 16-year-old student at South Fort Myers High School was arrested and charged with cruelty towards a child, allowing a child to engage in a sex act and possession of obscene material, the News-Press reports.

The teen's arrest stems from a May 17 incident at the school, where video footage taken from a surveillance camera shows 25 male students entering a bathroom to reportedly have sex with the 15-year-old victim, or watch her engage with others.

Sixteen of the students have been reprimanded by school officials for the incident, but the 16-year-old football player is the first to be arrested.

Video and photos of the underage girl having sex with multiple boys in the bathroom were allegedly sent around the school via Snapchat, WFTX reports.

Because the teen's cellphone was seized by police, and the subsequent charge against him for possessing obscene material, means he may have shot or had possession of, the video and/or photos of the incident.

The girl, who at the age of 13 was the victim of sex trafficking, had only been at the school two weeks when the incident occurred.

"She was not equipped to make a stable, rational decision in that situation," the girl’s appointed representative and CEO of an advocacy group for victims of sex slavery, Megan Estrem, told WBBH.

According to the girl’s mother, she followed a boy she had a crush on into the bathroom. The boy then told her he wanted sex, and she agreed.

News of her agreeing to have sex quickly spread and more boys came to the bathroom.

"She did not sleep with 25 boys in the bathroom," Estrem said. "There was only a handful that she did sleep with. In this case, it was more of a spectator sport."

The girl has admitted to having sex with multiple boys in the bathroom. The incident lasted about an hour.

"She has been in an environment where she has been told to behave a certain way, and there were severe consequences if she didn't," Estrem said.

The girl’s mother has removed her from school to protect her from the rumors, comments and video that's circulating on the Internet.

The boy charged in the incident, who was recognized as one of the top running backs in the state in 2015, was taken to a juvenile intake facility, the News-Press reports.

"While it is regrettable that this incident occurred in the first place, we are always committed to holding everyone responsible for their actions,” Lee County sheriff Mike Scott said in a statement following the teen's arrest.
