A jury found 17-year-old Eric Taylor guilty May 5 of third-degree murder and attempted murder for shooting DaRae Delgado and killing her unborn baby.
The incident took place May 26, 2014, when Taylor and Delgado were both 15. Taylor shot Delgado four times when she opened her front door, according to WTAE. She was 31 weeks pregnant at the time.
Delgado, who survived the shooting, burst into tears as the verdict was read and later fell onto a bench outside the court room. She testified during the trial that she was shot but that she could not identify the shooter, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Taylor now faces 43.5 to 87 years in prison, according to WTAE. He is being held in Allegheny County Jail as he awaits sentencing, which has been scheduled for Aug. 3.
The teen's lawyer, Chris Conrad, maintains his client's innocence. He said he was not satisfied with the verdict and that he plans to file an appeal.
He told reporters: "The disappointment is a lot about the fact that the victim herself has known him for seven or eight years, and been a friend of her brother and so on, and when she was initially interviewed, she said, 'I don't know who shot me but I'll know him again if I see him,' and she never was able to make an identification of him."
Key evidence in the case was provided by teenager LeRoy Powell (now deceased), who told police in a statement that he witnessed Taylor and another boy walk up to Delgado's porch, at which point he heard shots ring out and saw Taylor running from the scene holding a gun.
Powell later changed his version of events at a preliminary hearing and stated that he did not see Taylor holding a gun, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was shot to death a week later at the age of 15.
Powell's mother related that her son had received death threats after providing witness testimony.
In addition to third-degree murder and attempted murder, Taylor was found guilty of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and firearms violations, WTAE reports.
