Teen Impaled By Floorboard During Basketball Game (Video)

A 14-year-old basketball player from Wisconsin Heights was impaled on a piece of wood during a tournament at the Middleton-Cross Plains School District in Middleton, Wisconsin (video below).

The teen, who has not been identified, fell during a game. She slid along the floor and told the referee she couldn’t get up. “And the official said, 'What do you mean? Are you hurt?,’” tournament organizer Perry Hibner recalled to WISC-TV. “And she said, 'There's a piece of wood stuck to me.’”

A piece of wood in the floor had pushed into the girl’s stomach. “It was 3 to 4 inches long and in some parts, maybe a quarter to a half inch deep,” Hibner said, describing the floorboard that impaled the teen. Other players (all of whom were in middle school), spectators and parents were asked to leave the gym when emergency responders arrived and loaded the teen onto a stretcher before she was taken to the hospital. According to a surprised Hibner, there was no blood present.

The splinters missed her organs and, although she spent the night at American Family Children’s Hospital, she could be back on the court this week, UPI reported. “They did some exploratory surgery to see if there were any perforations internally and there weren't,” Hibner said.

The broken board is expected to be fixed next week, but the 15-year-old court is still in use.  “Kind of like a strike of lightning where you just don't think those things are going to happen. It was a complete fluke,” Hibner said.

Hibner added he doesn’t expect any legal action from the incident but that the courts would agree that it was simply an accident. “There's no rhyme or reason to this one,” he said.
