When a security guard stopped two teen girls for shoplifting in a New York City Victoria’s Secret store on Wednesday, he noticed a strong odor coming from a bag belonging to 17-year-old Tiona Rodriguez.
Inside was a dead fetus wrapped in a plastic bag. The guard called the police to the Herald Square store.
Rodriguez claimed the fetus was the result of a miscarriage she had on Wednesday. She claimed she did not know what to do with the remains. It is unclear whether the fetus was alive or dead when it was delivered.
The fetus had not matured past five or six months, officials said.
The New York Daily News reported that Rodriguez complained on her Facebook page on Wednesday night: “These Cramps, SON.”
Rodriguez was escorted out of the store in a wheelchair and taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
The Medical Examiners Office is expected to release the cause of the death on Friday.
Rodriguez and her friend Francis Estevez were charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property for stealing lingerie.
“She’s a good girl. I can’t believe she would do that,” said 17-year-old Zami Ford, a neighbor of Rodriguez’s in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. “Who the hell would do that? That’s sickening.”
Police believe Rodriguez might have delivered the fetus at Estevez’s home in Queens. Both their residences are being searched by NYPD.
