Disturbing new details have been revealed in the case of a 16-year-old American boy's mysterious death in Paraguay.
Luis Alejandro "Alex" Villamayor was found dead on June 27, 2015, in his friend's family estate, the Daily Mail reported. His death was initially ruled a suicide, but new evidence suggests that his gunshot wound was not self-inflicted, and that he may have been raped prior to his death.
Alex was the son of Luis Villamayor, a former Paraguayan congressman. Luis, who lived 400 miles away from the ranch where his son was found dead, had called his son's friend's parents on the night of the incident to have someone check up on the teenagers after he missed Alex's phone call.
Alex was spending the weekend at the ranch with his friends, 18-year-old Rene Hofstetter and 16-year-old Alain Jacks Diaz de Bedoya. The three teenagers were reportedly drinking mushroom tea together.
Hofstetter's parents were supposed to be in the estate that weekend. When Luis called the teen's parents, they sent ranch hand Matthias Wilbs, 35, to check up on the teens.
The next morning, Hofstetter called Luis and told him his son had shot himself. A local prosecutor also told Alex's parents that she believed the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
But photos of the crime scene showed Alex had a gun in his left hand, while the gunshot wound was to the right of his head. There was also no gunshot residue found on Alex's hand or clothing.
“That’s physically impossible to shoot yourself in the right side of your head with your left hand,” attorney Andy Fernandez, who is now on the legal team representing Alex, told The Daily Beast. “That’s proof he didn’t kill himself. If he killed himself, it would be everywhere. In his hair, on his skin.”
“Someone taught them how to create a suicide scene,” Fernandez continued, adding: "They washed up" before authorities arrived at the scene.
A second autopsy revealed even more disturbing details that were not previously reported. It showed that Alex was brutally abused before his death.
According to the medical examiner, Alex had bruises all over his body, including his genital area. Semen was also found in the teenager's anus.
“I thought it would be good for him to go to the ranch and have some fun,” said Alex's mother, Puning Luk. “I never imagined in a million years he was going to be beaten, raped and killed by his friends.”
“I am shell-shocked,” Luis added. “I never thought that such a thing would happen in Rene and Alain’s company. Alex was like a kid-brother to them. They were supposed to take care of him, not hurt him.”
Wilbs reportedly confessed to hiding the actual murder weapon, and placing a different gun in Alex's hand.
Hofstetter and his parents fled to Germany as new evidence emerged in the case. The parents said their son was seeking psychological treatment there. De Bedoya was indicted for murder in 2015, but was acquitted before the investigation was concluded.
Wilbs and Hofstetter are currently awaiting trial for premeditated murder.
“I’m not sure when or why they tortured him. That’s the part of the story I can’t understand,” Fernandez said.
