Canadian Teen Kicked Off Baseball Team For Having Long Hair (Video)

A mother recently took to Facebook to expose what she says is unfair treatment against her son by his baseball coach.

Liam Nazarek, 16, grew his hair out for over a year so that he could donate it to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients, but his baseball coach wanted him to cut his hair in order to play on the team.

“You need to be respectful of your coach,” said Kim Jorgenson, the teen’s mom. “You need to be respectful of the rules of the game. I don't think your hair has anything to do with that.”

At a recent game, Jorgenson decided to take out her camera phone and film the confrontation she had with coach Bryan MacKenzie.

When Jorgenson told MacKenzie that hair “is not a rule in baseball,” the coach responded, “It is for me. Accept it.”

“I have a rule on my baseball team, and I’ve had the same rule for the past six or seven years — I tell the kids, have your hair at respectable length, and look like ball players,” said MacKenzie, standing by his comments in the viral clip. “I stick by my words. I guess I’m old school, you bet. Why does it matter? Because I’m trying to teach these kids about some character, and some life skills. This isn’t about catching a ball — it’s about getting along on a team, and about being respectable young people, and to be able to cope in life, because you’re always going to be dealing with rules and people.”

Once the video was posted online, the Pincher Creek Minor Baseball Association released a statement supporting the coach and condemning Jorgenson for recording the video.

“The parent in this situation manipulated the situation using social media,” said the league in a statement. “This is totally unacceptable if not only because it sets a terrible example for our children. There was no respect in this situation whatsoever.”

As for Nazarek, he is officially kicked off the Pincher Creek Junior Dust Devils, but according to reports, a team in a neighboring community has already offered him a position, although he has yet to accept it.
