Teen Girls Accused of Burning Rare Tortoise to Death, Posting Video on Facebook

Jennifer Green, 18, and an unidentified 15-year-old girl were arrested today for allegedly pouring flammable fluid on an endangered gopher tortoise, lighting the creature on fire and stomping the animal until its shell broke.

According NBC Miami, the teens posted cellphone videos (below) of the incident on Facebook, which led to their arrest in Orange Park, Fla.

On the videos, the girls reportedly say, "Let's light his head on fire" and "Burn baby, burn baby."

“They’re very remorseful for what they did,” the father of one of girls told News 4 Jax. “They’re gonna go through the court system and get it all figured out okay. Whatever the court system hands down, that’s what they’re gonna do.”

“That’s sick to do what they did,” added the dad. “I didn’t see it. I didn’t see it on TV, and I don’t care. I was there when they found the turtle. I was there when wildlife [came to the house and] talked for an hour. And they know that there’s gonna be a court date coming up, and it’s all going to be handled.”

Green and the other teen were charged with felony cruelty to animals and a second-degree misdemeanor.

Col. Calvin Adams, director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Law Enforcement, said in a statement, "We take these issues very seriously. We appreciated the help from the public and our partners in working to protect our valuable natural resources."

If convicted, Green could get up to five years in jail, while 15-year-old girl is being prosecuted in the juvenile courts.
