A 13-year-old girl from China reportedly took her own life as the last way to shake off sexual assault by her father.
Xiaoguo left behind a series of suicide notes asking her family not to worry, then fell from the 36th story of the high-rise apartment she lived in. She died on impact.
Xiaoguo lived with her aunt in the Changzi county of north Shanxi province after her parents divorced.
The aunt, who was only identified by her surname Lv, said the girl’s father had recently asked if he could take Xiaoguo back to his hometown for “a few days.”
The teen went with him, but reportedly returned to her aunt "acting strangely" and had no appetite.
Lv said the girl later told her that her father had sexually assaulted her, twice raping her.
Her aunt called authorities and Xiaoguo’s father was arrested.
A few days later, Xioguo killed herself by jumping off a high-rise building, leaving behind the suicide notes, reports The Mirror.
Her note said:
“Many things require no explanation. I didn’t want to tell you these secrets because I was afraid you’d lose hope and want to give up on me.
“I’m sure you will be disappointed, but I hope you will not despair. Please burn my body and let my ashes be washed away by the sea. I've always hated lying; it's a shameful act. Even white lies are sometimes unforgivable. I should not have existed in this world; I have no right to say or do anything. Thank you. Sorry."
In another note, she said, "Death is just another beginning; I chose to forget because it pains me (this is a mistake).Thank you. Sorry. Guilt. Regret."
Xiaoguo’s father is currently being held on charges of raping and molesting a minor and is awaiting a trial as the investigation continues.
Many rapes involving incest go unreported. In September, NDTV exposed a father in Mumbai, India, who was repeatedly raping his daughters for 10 years, despite having AIDS. The mother knew about the rapes since 2005, when the oldest girl was 11 years old, but decided to keep the secret hidden for fear of the family losing face.
