Three males were arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at a Super 8 Motel in Westbrook, Maine.
Police arrived at the motel at around 8 a.m. on Feb 5 after receiving a call regarding suspicious activity in the parking lot, according to WMTW. Detectives were led to a hotel room, where they found that a teenage girl had been sexually assaulted by two teens and one legal adult.
The names of two of the suspects have not been released because they are minors. The two teens, aged 15 and 16, have been arrested and taken to a youth development center.
The third suspect, 19-year-old Garang Majok, 1is considered a legal adult and has been taken to county jail.
"Sometimes you get lucky," said Capt. Steven Goldberg. "You get called to the right place at the right time, and our officers did a good job of using street experience to do what they typically do and give that victim the space to let the officers know what's going on."
Investigators are still trying to piece together the victim's relation to the three suspects, though they say do not believe that the case is related to human trafficking or online dating.
However, according to WCSH, police believe that the attack was not random and that the victim knew the suspects in some way. Goldberg did not elaborate on how this was determined.
"It makes it tougher for investigators because they're human beings, so trying to investigate anybody, especially a child where something that heinous happened to them, it makes it more difficult," he said.
"We have our set statutes that we do and protocols, regardless of whether it's a juvenile or an adult, for what we have to prove for the elements of the crime so we can charge somebody with that. We have a list of things we have to do, people to interview, and elements to process."
The victim has been reunited with her family and is receiving counseling services. All three suspects have been charged with gross sexual assault. Their court date has yet to be reported.
