A 14-year-old New York girl claims she tried to commit suicide after a friend posted a nude selfie of her online.
“Jane Doe” of Brooklyn is suing the 13-year-old, identified as G.D., and his parents in Kings County Supreme Court.
The teens are both students at Brooklyn Prospect Charter School in Windsor Terrace, according to the New York Post.
Doe claims she sent a nude selfie to G.D. on Snapchat and he took a screenshot of it before it was erased. He allegedly "distributed the picture widely" on Instagram and Facebook when she refused to send him another one, according to the complaint.
She later found the image on Instagram after she was tagged as the subject of the picture, "making it obvious to everybody who saw it and knew her that it was a picture of her," the complaint states.
Doe says she was worried about her parents finding out. She deleted her social media accounts and allegedly changed her appearance, re-styling her hair and wearing loose-fitting sweaters and sweatshirts "to avoid recognition."
"Plaintiff was worried each school day because she feared other students had negative opinions of her due to the dissemination of the picture," the lawsuit says.
She grew depressed and “was constantly distraught by the reality of others having seen her nude body." She “more than once” engaged in "self-harming behavior associated with suicidal ideation, including auto-asphyxiation.”
A friend of her parents eventually brought the photo to their attention.
The girl seeks $70,000 in special and punitive damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress and fraud.
