Sen. Ted Cruz officially announced that he was suspending his 2016 GOP presidential campaign on Tuesday night. This came on the heels of multiple news organizations reporting that he had been soundly defeated by Donald Trump in the Indiana GOP primary.
Cruz made his rationale for the campaign suspension very clear: He no longer had a viable path to the nomination.
"From the beginning I've said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight, I'm sorry to say, it appears that path has been foreclosed," he admitted. "The voters chose another path, and so with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
