A missing 6-year-old Colorado boy is the subject of a massive search.
David Puckett has been missing since New Year’s Eve, when he wandered away from his home in Aurora, Colorado, reports the Daily Mail.
An Amber Alert was issued on Jan. 2, along with a $10,000 reward for information about his whereabouts. David has a slight learning disability, and therefore is considered to be especially “at-risk” by police.
His mother, Stephanie Puckett, gave a tearful public appeal for help. “I am worried, with how cold it is, that something really bad might have happened to him,” she said. “The coat he is wearing is not a very thick coat.”
The Aurora Police Department has created the Twitter hashtag #FindingDavid to give frequent updates on search efforts around the city. In addition, police have communicated with the media about the case via a live briefing.
The infrared system of the Denver Police Department’s Air One Helicopter has been employed in the hunt, as have bloodhounds from the Department’s K-9 unit.
Groups of volunteers have been gathering to assist in the search, but by mid-afternoon on Jan. 2, police had requested that the volunteers stop looking, noting that it could disrupt the effectiveness of the bloodhounds, The Denver Post reports.
The FBI is also reportedly involved in the case, aiding in neighborhood searches and providing federal resources at its disposal.
So far, foul play is not suspected in the case, notes Aurora Police Department spokesperson Crystal McKoy. She made a statement to the public:
It is still an active and ongoing investigation. At this point we believe he just wandered off. Thank you to everybody who's been involved. It takes a community to bring a positive result, so continue to share our posts. If you think you've seen something it doesn't hurt to call the tip line. We will make these efforts to speak with you.
David, who has reportedly wandered away once in the past, is approximately 4-feet tall and weighs 48 pounds, with light brown hair and blue-green eyes. Police say that when he went missing, he was wearing a black T-shirt, green camouflage pants, orange boots and a tan girl's coat.
Three tip lines have been set up to answer calls: 303-739-1870, 303-739-1865, and 303-739-1868.
