A Missouri teacher was sentenced to nine years in prison after admitting to having sex with a 14-year-old student on multiple occasions.
Rhett Rigby, 28, was an algebra teacher at Kearney Junior High School in Kearney, Missouri. He was sentenced on Jan. 29, receiving five years for second-degree statutory rape and four years for sexual conduct with a student by a teacher, WDAF reported.
Rigby pleaded guilty to the charges in November, although the crimes occurred sometime between fall 2012 and May 2013. Rigby admitted to having sex with the female student inside a classroom on two occasions and twice more at the student’s home, court documents state.
When school administrators confronted the math teacher, he initially denied the allegations. The student eventually told her mother and a friend that she had sex with Rigby on multiple occasions, The Kansas City Star reported.
The two exchanged nude photos through text messages and sent each other explicit emails, court documents state.
Rigby also made the student take a pregnancy test at one point. The student later told a friend that Rigby said he would have made her take “abortion pills” if she was pregnant, “whether she liked it or not.” The test came back negative.
During sentencing, the student’s mother told the courtroom the entire experience “has been a nightmare from hell for her and her daughter.” Rigby’s mother was also present during the sentencing. She said she wanted her son to get probation.
“I made a lot bad decisions,” Rigby told the court. “I’ve misused a young student's trust and I’m truly sorry.”
