Thomas Weir, a teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested for allegedly contacting a student through Facebook and offering money for sex acts.
According to NBC New York, Weir was arrested on Saturday night in the parking lot of a restaurant where he planned to meet the student.
Weir, a teacher for more than two decades, was charged with attempted sexual assault, attempted endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct and other crimes.
Prosecutors said Weir contacted the student through Facebook instant messaging and offered $50 for sex acts.
If convicted of all counts, Weir faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.
