Artie and Lisa Adams were stunned when their 8-year-old son returned from school and informed them that his teacher forced him to unclog a toilet with his bare hands.
"He said, 'Everything was good, but my teacher made me put my hand inside the toilet.' We were like, 'What?!'" Artie said.
The third-grader at Scootney Springs Elementary in Othello, Washington, was reportedly teased by his classmates after the incident, but the boy’s teacher, Brent Taylor, allegedly brushed it off and said, “It's nothing I haven't done before.”
Taylor, a 23-year teaching veteran, was disciplined by being required to take a safety course on hygiene — which he already took two months ago. Taylor also received a warning letter, and the incident has been marked on his permanent record with the teacher’s union.
Reporters at KEPR found this wasn’t the first time Taylor has been cited for bad behavior. In the last 16 months, he has reportedly received two other reprimands, both of which for inappropriately touching female students. Earlier this year, a teacher’s assistant reported feeling uncomfortable when Taylor tickled the back of her neck. He was put on leave last year for an incident in which another TA reported he roughly grabbed her by the arm in anger.
Othello Superintendent George Juarez said he stood by the principal’s punishment of Taylor.
Taylor would not agree to an interview, and he remains at his post at Scootney Springs Elementary.
The boy forced to unclog the toilet was allowed to transfer, but his father feels that isn’t enough.
“If he did it to our child, how many other kids has he done that to?” Artie said.
