Parents send their children to school to get an education, but one Texas student allegedly got more of an education than he bargained for. His teacher, Alexandria Vera, engaged in a sexual relationship with him then disappeared when school officials became suspicious. After weeks on the run, Vera turned herself in to police.
According to court documents, the relationship began in 2015 when the boy, then 13, was attending summer school, Daily Mail reports. Vera, who taught eighth grade, gave him her phone number via Instagram after he skipped class. The next day, according to the New York Post, she drove the boy home and they had their first sexual encounter.
Vera, 24, told an Aldine Independent School District peace officer that she and the student were in love.
In January, Vera became pregnant after engaging in sex on an almost daily basis. She claims the boy’s parents were supportive of the relationship and happy about the baby. His family accepted her as his girlfriend and allowed him to spend the night at her house, Vera says. She told neighbors he was her brother.
Vera and the boy flirted in front of other students, and this drew the attention of officials.
“He [...] grabbed her butt and everyone saw it,” one student told ABC. “And then they were talking about it.”
When Child Protective Services came to the school to question Vera in February, she panicked and decided to have an abortion. At the time, Vera denied the relationship.
In April, the school district placed Vera on administrative leave. She went on the run not long after, believing the police were going to arrest her.
“The safety and security of Aldine ISD's students and staff remains a priority of the school district,” Aldine ISD told ABC, according to Daily Mail.
Vera turned herself in June 1 after Houston police issued a warrant for her arrest.
She was charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child and released on a $100,000 bond.
Vera has a four-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
