A Swedish pedophile convicted of sexually abusing a 5-year-old girl has been given the green light to adopt a child of his own.
The unidentified man, who is in his 60s, is now not in danger of a criminal relapse, Swedish authorities said.
According to The Local, the man, from the town of Helsingborg, has been found guilty of more than 90 crimes (mostly charges related to fraud) including molesting a young girl from his neighborhood in 2004.
He was also suspected of raping a young teenage girl.
He now wants to become the father to his disabled 10-year-old stepson after the death of the boy’s mother, whom the man married in 2009.
The mother was alive when she and the biological father reportedly applied to consent to the adoption.
After a municipality's social affairs committee discovered that his risk of relapse was low, nine of the 10 panel members voted to allow the adoption application.
According to the Helsingborgs Dagblad (HD) newspaper, the committee did not have access to information on the alleged rape.
Social services say that the man needs to be supervised around his own children, event though he wasn’t charged for rape.
In 2007, the man was allegedly considered to be in the risk zone for sex crime relapse, and his "probable victims" were underage girls. Once again treatment and parenting classes were suggested.
After the case made headlines in Sweden, head of social services in Helsingborg, Dinah Abinger, has decided to file a complaint about the investigation into whether the man is fit to adopt.
“I should have stopped it … it was a weak investigation,” Abinger told The Local. “There are questions that aren't described in depth and the investigation should have been resubmitted to family court even before it reached the committee. Because of that I'm reporting us to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate.”
