Actress Susan Sarandon says she had to change her phone number after Hillary Clinton supporters sent her rape threats.
Sarandon supported Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and then Green Party Jill Stein during the 2016 elections, a stance that upset many supporters of Democratic nominee Clinton, The Guardian reports.
"I got from Hillary people 'I hope your crotch is grabbed,' 'I hope you’re raped,'" Sarandon recalls. "Misogynistic attacks."
But it was just one of many times she was subjected to threats from the left.
"Recently, I said 'I stand with Dreamers' and that started another wave [from the left]."
"'How dare you!'" she continued, recalling the messages she received. "'You who are responsible for this!'"
"I mean it's very flattering to think that I, on my own, cost the election," Sarandon sarcastically added in response. "That my little voice was the deciding factor."
In May 2016, Sarandon told Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show" she "broke up" with longtime friend Clinton because of the candidate's vote in favor of the Iraq War, the Inquisitr reports. She implied she was more scared of Clinton's warmongering habits than then-Republican nominee Donald Trump's border wall.
Despite the insults, Sarandon says she stands by her previous statement and political choices.
Asked if she still believes Clinton was more of a threat than Trump, Sarandon defended her remarks.
"Not exactly, but I don’t mind that quote," she said. "I did think she was very, very dangerous. We would still be fracking, we would be at war [if she was president]. It wouldn’t be much smoother. Look what happened under Obama that we didn’t notice."
Her latest remarks prompted debate online.
Many continued to hate on the star.
"Just want to thank Susan for giving us the current president, a childlike man with not a wit of intelligence," wrote one person in Oregon Live's comments section. "Susan is not alone responsible for this fiasco in the white house. That's giving her way too much credit. We can thank the minus-intelligence voters who believe in perverted behavior, and Russian hackers telling these slow-to-no-brained folk how to vote. Susan is entitled to her opinions, but her hatred of Hillary got in the way of rational thinking. Now we are stuck with a dotard that we can't get rid of."
Others chose not to blame Sarandon.
"[She] did not cost Clinton the election, she lost it on her own along with the fumbling and bumbling DNC," wrote one commenter. "I am a liberal and Clinton wasn't right for the job. One thing though at least she lives on this planet Im not sure where trump and his followers live. They are way out there."
