Suicidal Woman Suing the NYPD For Shooting Her After She Lunged at Them With a Knife

A Bronx woman is suing the New York Police Department after officers shot her in the leg, reports The New York Post.

Officers responded to a call in Pelham Bay in March 2012. A boyfriend told 911 that Joann Clarke, 43, was emotionally disturbed and “might hurt herself.” Police found Clarke in her apartment stabbing herself in the stomach with steak and carving knives. According to the police report, she ran at one of the officers with an 8-inch knife. The officer shot her in the leg.

On March 23, 2012, the Daily News reported that Clarke threw knives at the police when the arrived shortly before 10 a.m. An officer told the Daily News that one of the knives hit an officer in the hand.

“Leave me alone, I’m going to kill you,” she allegedly shouted at the NYPD.

The suit says the use of force was “excessive, unjustified [and] unreasonable.”

According to Clarke’s claim filed in Bronx Supreme Court, the officers were negligent “unfit, incompetent and/or improperly or insufficiently trained.”

She is seeking unspecified damages.

The Daily News reported she was taken to Jacobi Medical Center after the shooting, but that her wounds were not considering life threatening.

One officers was so disturbed by the incident that he was also taken to Jacobi reportedly to be treated for psychological trauma.
