Suburban Mother Accused Of Poisoning Her Own Children

Krystle El Khatib, 29, a mother from Schiller Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, is accused of trying to kill herself and her two children.

WGNTV reported El Khatib crushed benzodiazepine pills, an anti-anxiety medication, and put them in her children's apple juice. El Khatib forced her 9-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter to drink two glasses each, threatening to hit her son if he didn’t finish the juice.

El Khatib then reportedly attempted to commit suicide by drinking a similar drug cocktail.

The following day, the boy apparently woke up, vomiting, and contacted his father. The children were then transported to a local hospital and treated for poisoning. The children are doing well and recovering in the custody of their father.

Authorities credited the 9-year-old boy for helping authorities pinpoint El Khatib’s role, informing them about everything from crushing the pills to forcing the children to drink the juice.

Investigators told reporters El Khatib “told a social worker at the hospital that she brought her kids into the world and she can take them out.” El Khatib allegedly poisoned herself and her children because she was angry at their father.

El Khatib has no criminal record, and authorities had not any previous contact with the family.  El Khatib’s bail was set at $1.5 million.
