Study Finds Country's Top 15 Smartest Cities

While many people like to believe their town is full of intelligent people, one study has narrowed down the smartest cities to a top 15 list, and the towns might be surprising to some.

Missing from the list are the most populated cities in the United States as well as most of the cities on the West Coast. At the top of the list is Ithaca, N.Y., whihc is home to Cornell University. State College, Pa., and Lafayette, Ind., were second and third.

The study was conducted by Luminosity, a company that develops mind games to increase users' brain power. They came up with the list by conducting a test to determine a person's intellect level.

Three million people between the ages of 15 and 85 years old played the game, which was split into categories of memory, flexibility, processing speed, attention and problem solving.

While the towns are smaller and less known, most of them are home to large universities.

"Neuroscience research has found that those who are engaged in learning and cognitively stimulating activities throughout the lifetime build up a 'cognitive reserve' that helps maintain and improve cognitive performance," said Luminosity's data scientist, Daniel Sternberg.

Big cities like New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston and Chicago were not on the list.
