Students Evacuated After Body and Explosives Found on University of Central Florida Campus

Authorities investigating an apparent suicide at the University of Central Florida discovered weapons and explosives in a dormitory early Monday. Classes were cancelled and students evacuated, although UCF says there is no immediate threat.

UCF spokesman Grant Heston said the body was found in the bedroom of a dorm where an assault weapon and improvised explosives were also found.

University police were called to the Tower 1 dorm at 12:20 a.m. when a fire alarm went off in the building. On their way to the scene, a 911 call was received about a man with a gun, said Heston. The man was found dead from an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound. Officials have not said if the deceased was a student at the university.

Housing about 500 students, the dorm was evacuated and an adjacent parking garage was closed.

"We don't believe there is any imminent threat to the campus," Heston said.

Explosives were found inside a bag and the Orange County bomb squad, FBI, and police are collaborating to remove the devices safely.

Evacuees were taken to an open area about 1,000 feet from the UCF Arena.

UCF’s main campus is closed until noon Monday. Flashing signs around campus alert students and staff that classes before noon are cancelled.
