Chinese college student Dim Xiong Chien planned to propose to his girlfriend while setting off fireworks, though he accidentally set his college campus on fire in the process.
The 22-year-old wanted to make his marriage proposal special, so he planned to set off three large boxes of fireworks as he leaned down on one knee and asked his girlfriend, Cong Yen, to marry him.
“He had prepared this big event in secret and had told her to meet him by the sports ground for a romantic walk,” Shin Tan, Chien’s friends, said.
Yen apparently forgot about the date, but Chien set the fireworks off anyway in the hopes of drawing her attention. Unfortunately, when Chien lit the explosives, they set nearby grass ablaze and burned down Liaoning Advertisement Vocational College’s sports hall.
Firemen rushed to the scene and attempted to put out the nearly 10-foot high flames, while Chien searched the campus for his girlfriend.
“I was feeling a bit surprised that she hadn't shown up, and was completely unaware that the fireworks had set the grass on fire,” Chien said. “When I found her I said she had to come with me as there was something important I wanted to tell her and show her."
Chien eventually found his girlfriend, but when he realized he’d started a fire, he decided to postpone the proposal until another date. When Yen discovered Chien’s plans, she noted that she still loved him despite the fireworks accident, but that her parents suggested she “steer clear” of Chien.
A spokesperson for the college said the sports hall is covered by insurance, adding that the administration has yet to make a decision regarding Chien's punishment.
Firemen managed to extinguish the flames after one hour.
