Strangers discovered and rescued a two-year-old girl who was sitting inside of an unlocked vehicle at around 7 p.m. Monday outside of a Chipotle restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, reports Fox 4 News.
The child’s mother, Tiquana Pasco, 29, has been charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child after witnesses say her daughter was found perspiring inside of the car on a 91-degree day. She had also reportedly vomited four times while in the sweltering vehicle.
Jeremy Welch, who was having dinner with his family at the eatery, says he noticed the girl after exiting Chipotle.
“We had dinner, we came out, and I noticed as I passed a car parked in a handicapped spot that there was a child in the backseat, she was unattended, the windows were cracked, it was 91 degrees out and she was sweating profusely,” Welch said. “Finally my wife said, ‘the little girl can’t stay in there.’ She opened the car and pulled the child out. The woman with the car next door, she got a bottle of water and was giving the little girl some water.”
But Pasco was not grateful for the strangers’ intervention. As they attempted to take the child inside of Chipotle so she could cool off in the air conditioning, her mom reportedly exited a Game Stop and screamed, “Why are you touching my child, why do you have my child?”
Welch’s wife says she explained the situation to Pasco and why it was dangerous to leave her toddler unattended in the vehicle, but the mother responded with violence and hit the stranger, who says she refused to give her child back to her.
“She continued to shove at me and slap me and push me to try and get around me,” Welch’s wife said. “And I just stood in her way and told her she couldn’t have her child back until the police got there.”
Cops say Pasco claimed she left her daughter in the car because she had fallen asleep. She says she was only in Game Stop for three to four minutes returning a cord and that she knew she was wrong for leaving her child in the car and was aware of other cases in which kids have died in similar situations.
Pasco is being held on $1,500 cash or surety bond. If she is found guilty, she could get up to one year in jail. Her child is currently staying with relatives.
