A New Jersey man walked into the Galloway Township Police Department Monday and confessed to the killing of a 15-year-old boy back in May 1990.
Steven L. Goff, 41, of Ventor, N.J., confessed to stabbing Frederick Hart to death when he was 18 years old. Hart’s body was so badly decomposed when it was found 19 months after his death that medical examiners were unable to determine the cause of death.
Goff cried at times during his initial court appearance on Tuesday. He wanted to plead guilty, but Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Michael A. Donio would not let him without legal counsel.
“I’m prepared to enter a plea, a guilty plea, right here now,” he said in court.
On May 7, 1990, Goff allegedly stabbed Hart several times with a knife in the woods behind the Clubs Condominium. The motive for the crime has not yet been disclosed.
Hart’s body was found by a hunter in December 1991.
“I did the crime,” Goff said in court, “and I’m prepared to do the time.”
Goff has something eerie and chilling that killers prior to the advent of social media never had before: a Twitter account. The tagline for @SteveGoff314 of Ventor, N.J., is “You miss 100% of the shots you never take…statistical fact.” Goff’s shot at concealing the truth got the better of him.
Goff remains in an Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $1 million bail.
