Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot to death two weeks ago at the home of Olympian Oscar Pistorius, was not carrying his child according to family members.
A recent story believed to have originated from the National Enquirer suggested that Pistorius, who is known as the “Blade Runner”, had been worried that his girlfriend was cheating on him with a close friend.
This, the story says, was the reason the pair had been fighting on the night of Steenkamp’s death. Allegedly, when she told Pistorius that she was in fact carrying his child, it sent the 26-year-old Olympian ‘over the edge’.
The rumors have been picked up on and published in several different newspapers and gossip sites across the world, but the Steenkamp family spokesman has publically denied the reports.
“The post mortem would have revealed if Reeva was pregnant and it did not reveal anything like this. Maybe it comes from the other side, to garner and build up some sort of support for Oscar,” Mike Steenkamp said.
He added, “Had it been the case, Reeva’s mother June would have been the first to know.”
Pistorius was granted bail after a hearing last week, but will soon face the charge of premeditated murder at a full trial scheduled to begin in June.
Pistorius denies the murder. He claims he killed Steenkamp by accident, opening fire after mistaking her for an intruder in his bathroom. However, prosecutors say he intentionally shot her in cold blood after the couple had an argument.
His family said on Tuesday that the runner held a private memorial service for Steenkamp at his Uncle Arnold's home in Pretoria, where he has been staying since he was released on bail.
“Since it is such a sensitive issue, Oscar has asked for a private service with people who share his loss, including his family members who knew and loved Reeva as one of their own. The Pistorius family would like to make a personal request to the media, to please respect their privacy at their home in Pretoria tonight.”
