A New York woman has been charged after allegedly starving and beating her puppy and leaving it for dead in a shopping bag.
According to reports, 34-year-old Alsu Ivanchenko was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after Snowflake, a tiny Maltese Shih Tzu, was found emaciated and unresponsive by passersby on Staten Island.
“Per our partnership with the NYPD, the ASPCA is involved with this case,” said the ASPCA in a statement. “The dog has sustained very substantial injuries. She is being provided with medical care, and we are continuing to monitor her progress closely. As this is an active NYPD investigation, we cannot say more at this time. However, we encourage anyone with possible details in this case to please step forward and report this information to the NYPD.”
Upon receiving the dog, who suffered broken bones and complete blindness from the abuse, was renamed Charlotte upon being taken in by workers at the South Shore Animal Hospital.

“Once we recognized the dog and learned about the situation, we immediately contacted the police to provide any information we had on the pet and the owner,” said a representative from Animal Health Veterinary Group to the NY Daily News. Animal Health Vet Group took over the care of Charlotte after South Shore initially took her in.
A Facebook page has been set up to provide updates on the status of Charlotte.
