A police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina, has been charged with the murder of a suspect.
A video (below) has surfaced showing Officer Michael Slager fatally shooting Walter Scott in the back last Saturday, reports The Post And Courier.
Officer Slager reportedly pulled Scott's car over for a broken tail light.
Scott, who had an outstanding Family Court warrant, apparently engaged in a confrontation with Officer Slager, possibly over a Taser. After Scott took off running, Officer Slager fired eight shots, notes The New York Times.
After Scott fell to the ground, Officer Slager told him to put his hands behind his back.
The New York Times states, "Police reports say that officers performed CPR and delivered first aid to Mr. Scott. The video shows that for several minutes after the shooting, Mr. Scott remained face down with his hands cuffed behind his back. A second officer arrives, puts on blue medical gloves and attends to Mr. Scott, but is not shown performing CPR. As sirens wail in the background, a third officer later arrives, apparently with a medical kit, but also not seen performing CPR."
Officer Slager reportedly claimed through his former lawyer that he shot at Scott because he “felt threatened.”
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said in a statement, “Michael Slager was charged with murder, a felony which carries a conviction of death or a term of 30 years to life in prison.”
