"Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner has responded publicly to allegations that she used the N-word in a video clip that circulated on the internet (see below).
The 21-year-old British actress came under fire after a Twitter account called "game of thrones news" uploaded a short video depicting Turner and her boyfriend, pop star Joe Jonas, working out together at the gym. At one point, Turner looks at the camera and says: "What's up, motherf***ers?"
The person who posted the video accused Turner of using the N-word.
"Sophie Turner says the n word casually and laughs about it and this marks the end of this updates account," the Tweet read.
A number of Twitter users were outraged.
"Shameful!" one user wrote, according to the Daily Mail. "I thought she'd be better than this! Hope she'll not get anymore roles since this is a bad example to the children!"
"Sophie Turner saying the n word so casually and Joe Jonas laughing about it really says something," wrote another.
A third person Tweeted: "Sophie Turner, a Caucasian, said the n word in a video while Joe Jonas, another Caucasian, laughed about it?"
"I thought Joe Jonas would be above dating such a nasty person!" someone else remarked. "Can't imagine his grandpa (he's black) would be proud of this."
Responding to the controversy, Turner clarified the video's content and said she was distressed by fact that so many people assumed she would use a racial slur.
"I used the word 'motherf***ers' in a recent video posted in an Instagram story and not a hateful racial slur that has been suggested," she wrote in a statement. "I am incredibly upset that anyone would think otherwise, and I want to make it clear that I would never use such an abhorrent word."
During a recent interview with InStyle, Turner spoke about the difficulties of growing up in the spotlight and suggested that she might have quit acting if it weren't for the support of her "Game of Thrones" co-star Maisie Williams.
"This has been amazing and hard," she said of her success. "To have someone who understands what you’re going through, who’s the same age, who came from pretty much the same background -- that is so rare. And we’ve had the same struggles in terms of dealing with body image and puberty and growing up in the public eye. But I found my strength in her, and I think she found her strength in me."
