A woman from Mount Vernon, New York, was arrested for allegedly killing her 15-month-old daughter and putting the baby in a freezer.
Dasia Bartee, 26, was arrested after police responded to a 911 call on Aug. 5 and tried to perform life-saving measures on Samia Yusef. They were unable to resuscitate her and she died at the scene, reports WABC.
The Mount Vernon Police Department announced the child had been dead for several hours before they arrived, but did not specify how she had died. They said the temperature of the child's body was "extremely cold," and that she had significant trauma to her face, as well as internal bleeding.
"This story of what happened is a sad situation," Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas said. "But it is an ongoing investigation."
Police say there is a possibility that the child's body was placed in the freezer.
According to CBS News, Bartee's two other daughters, ages 6 and 9, were at the home when police arrived, but were unharmed and now remain in the custody of child protective services.
Bartee was arraigned in court and a judge ordered her held on $50,000 bail.
"It's really deeply disturbing," Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas told WCBS. "No child, no infant, no toddler should be subjected to that type of violence."
