Son Saves Mother's Life During Attempted Robbery Outside Of South Carolina Restaurant

A Charleston man has been arrested after attempting to rob a 79-year-old woman, only to be chased off by the woman’s son, police say.

The incident occurred Aug. 20. Gene Penninger told police he fired seven shots at two men who pushed his mother onto the ground and tried to rob her, Post and Courier reported.

Mary Rancourt, who owns SeeWee Restaurant in Awendaw, was carrying money from her business to her house at the time. Penninger said he heard his mother yelling and that’s when he came out with his pistol.

The men, who were reportedly wearing gorilla masks, ran off without getting any money. One of the suspects jumped into a red vehicle while the other escaped by foot, according to an incident report cited by Post and Courier.

Detectives checked nearby Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital to see if anyone had come in with a gunshot wound. Penninger, who manages his mother’s restaurant, was able to identify one of the suspects.

Authorities identified the suspect as 46-year-old Eugene Ricky Perry. They went to his home and Perry’s girlfriend told them he had been shot during an incident in Huger.

Perry was arrested Thursday and has been charged with strong-arm robbery. He is also wanted for failure to pay child support, according to Charleston County jail records.

There has been no information on the second suspect so far.
