Soldiers Uncover A Possible Drug-Smuggling Tunnel In Mexico (Photos)

Mexican soldiers uncovered a secret tunnel that was supposed to began in Tijuana, Mexico, and end at a location 22 miles south of San Diego, California, the Army announced on Tuesday.

While the tunnel wasn’t completed when it was discovered, it was 500 feet in length and 66 feet underground. The tunnel was ventilated and had a light system. Though illegal passageways like this can be used to smuggle undocumented immigrants into the United States, officials found 44 pounds of marijuana in the tunnel.

The tunnel’s entrance was hidden underneath a house near a Mexican air force base and a regional federal police facility.

Nine people were arrested for building the tunnel and a truck found inside the passageway was impounded.
