A Kentucky man found a human skull that is thousands of years old inside a sinkhole.
The man was farming his land when he came across a sinkhole, Mad World News reports. The finding startled him, but not as much as what he found inside.
The man discovered a human skull buried about 12 feet deep inside a sinkhole on his property in Frankfort, WKYT reports. The man alerted authorities, who first investigated the incident as a homicide, but soon realized the skull did not belong to a modern human.
Franklin County coroner Will Harrod examined the skull, and determined it to be Native American, roughly 1,000 to 3,000-years-old.
“We received notification today from Franklin County coroner Will Harrod that the skeletal remains found on my property are of Native American origin,” landowner Susan Knoll said. “We appreciate the work of Mr. Harrod and Sheriff Pat Melton in helping recover these priceless artifacts. We will work with the proper authorities to reinter the remains to the original site.”
Authorities have since suspended their investigation, pending further notice from the coroner's office.
