Sheriff's Deputy Delivers Baby At Car Wash

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy Roger Bertola has three children of his own, but he never delivered a baby until Sept. 9. He was flagged down to the parking lot of a car was in Santa Clarita, KTLA reported.

“He was driving down the road when a passing motorist rolled down his window and yelled ‘Baby, Baby’ and then pulled into a parking lot,” spokeswoman Shirley Miller said, The Santa Clarita Valley Signal reported.

“At first, I was trying to help the mother get comfortable but she made it very clear she didn’t want me to recline the front seat, and I certainly wasn’t about to debate anything with her,” Bertola said in a news release. Bertola apparently told her to “hold it,” but it was immediately obvious the baby girl wasn’t waiting.

However, the birth wasn’t a smooth process. “While still encased in its amniotic sac, the baby began to crown,” Miller wrote in the news release. “Bertola tenderly guided the baby as it was pushed out and the sac broke. Bertola gently tapped the baby girl on the back and helped clear her airway.”

The baby’s father was ecstatic and reportedly began jumping up and down. Both the baby girl and her mother, identified only by her first name - Mariela, are reportedly in good shape.
