A Kansas man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl just weeks after he was released from jail for another assault.
23-year-old Corbin James Breitenbach has been charged with attempted capital murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated criminal sodomy after he allegedly snuck into a stranger's home in Wichita, where he is accused of then choking and raping a 7-year-old girl on a balcony, Daily Mail reports.
Breitenbach was previously sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for reportedly choking and raping a 22-year-old woman in 2012. He was released from prison in late April.
According to records from Sedgwick County Jail, authorities have also drawn warrants for Breitenbach on another case of aggravated criminal sodomy, burglary, aggravated kidnapping, rape, and attempted first-degree murder.
He reportedly snuck into the girl's home in the early hours of June 11, where Breitenbach is alleged to have choked her until she passed out, and then sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene.
Prosecutors are expected to argue that Breitenbach's "conduct during the commission of the offense manifested excessive brutality to the victim in a manner not normally present in that offense."
The girl, who was hospitalized after the incident, is doing "better," and is no longer in the hospital, according to Sedgwick County District attorney Marc Bennett.
"We are in contact with her and her family," said deputy police chief Gavin Seiler, reports the Wichita Eagle. "Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers."
In a statement, Breitenbach's family expressed their "utter shock and disbelief" at the man's actions.
"It is impossible to communicate the depth of our sorrow and the grief we feel for the victim and her family," said the man's family.
The condo where Breitenbach allegedly carried out the assault is across from his girlfriend's home.
The woman, who did not wish to be identified and said that she had not been dating Breitenbach for long, reported that the suspect had been out at a birthday party that night.
"I brought him home," she said. "He'd had a little bit to drink."
"I'm just kind of numb," the girlfriend added. "I don't know what to believe."
Neighbor Tonia Benoist said she's "extremely glad" that authorities arrested Breitenbach. "I'm kind of relieved in a sense, but this is not the place I moved into sixteen years ago," she added, according to KWCH.
"I just pray for her and her family, and I hope they get counseling for her from the get-go because this is going to be something she's going to have to deal with for the rest of her life," Benoist said of the young girl.
