A 46-year-old San Bernardino, California, woman was detained by police Dec. 8 on suspicion of murdering her 5-year-old son.
Maria Isabel Bautista De Lopez was reportedly found in the same room as her dead son at the apartment they shared with the woman’s boyfriend, KTLA notes.
Police were called to the address shortly after 4 p.m. and found the boy dead. He had suffered injuries from a sharp object, police said, but the cause of death has not yet been released.
Police sources said it was a gruesome scene, and that the boy was nearly beheaded, according to the San Bernardino County Sun. However, this report has not been confirmed by the authorities.
“This is a bad one,” police chief Jarrod Burguan said at the scene, according to the Sun.
De Lopez also suffered lacerations, which police believe were self-inflicted.
“She was on the stretcher and her eyes were closed and she looked very ... full of sweat," neighbor Marlon Servantes told CBSLA. "I was looking to see if she was breathing. She was breathing, but she was breathing very heavily."
After De Lopez was treated at the hospital, police arrested her on the charge of murder.
Neighbors were reportedly shocked by the incident.
“Everybody [got] along," neighbor Kirk Jones told KTLA. "We see everybody every day and it’s real quiet, so it was a shock today."
The 5-year-old, whose name has not been reported, was remembered fondly.
“He really liked to play Superman, Batman and stuff," neighbor Amarre Walke told CBSLA. "He liked to play tag."
De Lopez’s boyfriend and her son's father, who lives close by, were questioned by police but have not been arrested.
The boy’s death was San Bernardino’s 40th homicide of the year, according to The Sun.
