A man was charged with child neglect after police say he left an unloaded semiautomatic handgun near several children.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that Ryan Casey Wilson was taking care of five children, whose ages varied from 4 to 12, at the Surf Song Resort, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were called to the vacation rentals property Monday evening to settle a dispute.
People at Surf Song Resort reportedly said Wilson was loading belongings that weren’t his into a truck. Police also learned that a group of children has been left unattended.
When deputies found the kids, one of the youngsters gave information that there was a gun in the room, according to an arrest affidavit. A deputy found a 40-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic handgun on the bed, the sheriff's office said.
Officials said the weapon was not loaded, but still could have posed a threat to the youngsters if they had handled it.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office website, Wilson was released from custody on his own recognizance on Tuesday.
