Roman Polanski Free; Won't be Extradited to U.S.

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski will not be extradited to the United States to face being sentenced for having sex with a 13 year-old girl over 30 years ago.  Read more on the Roman Polanski case below.

Roman Polanski had sex with a 13 year-old girl named Samantha Gemier more than 30 years ago but fled before his sentencing.

Now the Swiss say a flaw in the United States’ request for extradition is why they released the 76 year-old director.

Polanski has already been released from house arrest.

The director was in Swiss custody since last September, when police in Zurich arrested him on his arrival in the city to accept a lifetime achievement award.  The Swiss arrested him at the request of authorities in Los Angeles.

Swiss authorities allowed the director to leave jail and serve his time under house arrest. Polanski was a possible flight risk so he had to pay $4.5 million in bail and hand over his passport and identification.

Polanski served his house arrest in his three-story Swiss chalet with his wife and their two children.
