Rhode Island Police Post "Stupid Is As Stupid Does" After Arresting Teenager

A Rhode Island police department stirred controversy after announcing the arrest of a teenager on Facebook with a quote from the movie Forrest Gump, “stupid is as stupid does.”

Authorities arrested and filed misdemeanor charges against the 18-year-old and a juvenile Jan. 3 for allegedly trying to steal equipment from patrol cars and attempting to take off their hubcaps, Fox News reports.

Soon after, Warwick Police Department posted the movie quote alongside a photo of the teenager.

The suspect’s brother was one of the many who complained, and told Fox News authorities should not have said his brother was stupid.

Police soon removed the photo and quote and replaced it with another status stating, “you can’t make this stuff up.”

“In the interest of not besmirching a young man for his mistake, the picture and jocularity has been removed-thanks to a few rational comments from our FB friends concerning professionalism. However the story remains the same,” they wrote.

According to WPRO-AN, the Warwick Police Department is now reviewing their Facebook posting policy.

“We’ll be taking a look at that and obviously we want to make sure that whatever we put up there is professional, and we don’t need to make those kinds of comments,” Police Chief Steven McCartney said.

“I understand why the older brother, who obviously is loyal to his younger brother, was a little bit upset, and we probably could have done without that entry,” he added.

However, some still felt the police’s comments even after the incident were inappropriate.

“You know what a special kind of stupid is? It is the cops being called out on their professionalism, and STILL not getting it. Report what happened, or ask for the public's help, but lose the commentary ("You can't make this stuff up."). Now THAT is stupid,” said Steve Johnson.

Yet some agreed with the original post’s sentiments and felt it should not have upset anybody in the first place.

“I think it's hysterical that they robbed a police station...Instead of getting mad have fun with it. My father's a cop and believe me if I did this he would be calling me stupid too. I wasn't innocent even with a cop father. I felt stupid and admitted I was plenty of times,” Holly D Cassini wrote.
