Researchers Brew Up A Hydrating Beer By Adding Electrolytes

Researchers in Australia have reportedly created a new hydrating beer by adding electrolytes and reducing the alcohol content.

The Huffington Post reports that a team from Griffith University's Health Institute recently tested the idea by modifying the ingredients in four different types of beer: two commercial, one of average strength and one light brew.

"Of the four different beers the subjects consumed, our augmented light beer was by far the most well retained by the body, meaning it was the most effective at rehydrating the subjects," Ben Desbrow, an associate professor who led the study, said in a released statement.

By adding electrolytes, an ingredient commonly found in sports drinks, and lowering the alcohol content researchers found that beer could become even more refreshing, according to a story in The Sydney Morning Herald. It was also reported that the taste of the modified brews didn't change.

Desbrow said it was more effective to tell people how to lessen dehydration than telling them not to drink.

"If you're going to live in the real world, you can either spend your time telling people what they shouldn't do, or you can work on ways of reducing the danger of some of these socialized activities," he said.

The Sydney Morning Herald also notes that the new super beer paves the way for products to be developed that could reduce the likelihood of hangovers.
