Details of Joran van der Sloot's reported confession to murdering a young woman in Peru are slowly emerging -- and they are indeed chilling.
According to the Peruvian newspaper La Republica, van der Sloot drank espresso and ate sponge cake while the battered body of 21-year-old Stephany Flores lay dead a few feet away. As he ate, van der Sloot pondered what to do with her body.
Perhaps leaning on past experience, one idea he had was to dump the body in the ocean. Police found maps charting ocean currents in his backpack after he was arrested.
"I was going to use one of the traveling bags to take the body out of the hotel, but I didn't do it because I was afraid that I would be detained leaving the hotel with my baggage and not paying the bill," the newspaper reports van der Sloot told police. "I didn't because I was too afraid to be confronted."
Van der Sloot says he took a few amphetamines, took a shower, and left the hotel.
Van der Sloot escaped to Chile, where he was arrested after an international manhunt.
