On Wednesday Reeva Steenkamp, a South African model, asked her Twitter followers, “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?” The 29-year-old went on to tweet out that people should “get excited.” She was obviously looking forward to Valentine's Day.
Unfortunately, she didn’t live to see it.
Steenkamp’s boyfriend, Olympian Oscar Pistorius, allegedly killed her early Thursday morning during a shooting at his home. According to CNN, he has been charged with murder. Under South African law, Pistorius will officially be named as the suspect when he appears in court Friday.
A spokeswoman for Pistorius said that he is “assisting the police with their investigation but there will be no further comment until matters become clearer later today.” There have been some rumblings that this was not the first incident of domestic trouble between the couple.
It is still not known exactly what happened on Thursday morning, but if it does turn out that Pistorius is guilty of murder, it would be a sad conclusion to the athlete’s otherwise inspiring story. Nicknamed the “Blade Runner,” Pistorius made history when he became the first Paralympian to compete in the regular Olympics last year. His legs were amputated below the knees when he was just a toddler, so he ran with special carbon fiber blades affixed to his legs.
Steenkamp was born in Cape Town and grew up in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The agency that represents Steenkamp announced her death.
Capacity Relations said on Twitter: “She was the kindest, sweetest human being; an angel on earth and will be sorely missed.”
Steenkamp was going to appear on the “Tropika Island of Treasure” television show on Saturday.
“We are deeply saddened and extend our condolences to Reeva's family and friends,” said a message on the show's website.
