Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel is under fire after she tweeted a complaint about non-English-speaking employees during a trip to Kmart.
Frankel, who stars on “Real Housewives of New York City,” stirred up controversy when she tweeted her frustrations about Kmart employees who “speak no English whatsoever.” The tweets immediately received responses from fans and followers who called her “ignorant,” “racist,” and “insensitive.”
“Wow @Kmart has 2 registers open w 5 other employees standing around & two speak no English whatsoever. Shoes are sapatos right?” Frankel tweeted on Jan. 22, according to the New York Daily News. In Spanish, shoes are actually “zapatos.”
“No excuse for being at a retailer & not able to be directed to what u need,” the 45-year-old reality TV star wrote in another tweet. “0 to do w race. I’ll explain but can’t understand it for you.”
Kmart’s social media operator didn’t seem to be as offended by the tweets as her followers were.
“We’re upset to hear about your experience yesterday, Bethenny,” the retail chain tweeted to Frankel. “Would you like to DM us more about it? We’re here to help!”
“Oh how I wish I was as good at starting fires in my fireplace as I am on twitter,” the reality star later tweeted in response to the controversy.
