Realistic Barbie-Inspired Doll to Hit the Market This Week

A new Barbie-like doll is both raising eyebrows and garnering applause this week. The Lammily doll, which is designed to look more like the average woman, is hitting the market this week, just in time for the holidays.

“I wanted to show that reality is cool,” said creator Nikolay Lamm. “And a lot of toys make kids go into fantasy, but why don’t they show real life is cool? It’s not perfect, but it’s really all we have. And that’s awesome.”

The proportions of the doll are those of an average 19-year-old woman and based on the Center for Disease Control’s data.

Lamm is a former graphic designer turned toymaker who created the doll for an art project in July of 2013. Many parents were so inspired by Lamm’s initial project that they asked him for their own copies of the doll.

“Parents and their kids were emailing and asking where they could buy the ‘Normal Barbie,’ but they didn’t exist,” Lamm told Time. He then raised over $500,000 to start manufacturing the Lammily doll. Now, 19,000 copies of the doll will go to people who backed the project. An additional 25,000 dolls have been manufactured and are selling for $25 each

As the popular adage goes, that’s not all, folks. Lamm is now selling extra outfits for his dolls and sticker packs that include stretch marks, cellulite, scars, acne, cuts, bruises and tattoos in order to reflect the appearances of everyday women.

“Look, we all get boo-boos and scratches,” Lamm said.“Life isn’t perfect; we all sometimes fall down, but we get back up.”

The target market for the dolls, little girls, praised the product in a recent video.

“She looks like my sister!” one girl exclaimed, smiling.

“She kind of looks like my aunt Katie,” said another.

“She looks like a regular girl going to school.”

“She looks like she would help someone if they were hurt.”

“She’s not like other dolls … she looks real.”
