Man Who Filmed Eric Garner's Death Fearful That Prison Food Is Poisoned

Ramsey Orta, the man who filmed the footage of Eric Garner being killed by an NYPD officer, has been in jail in Rikers Island since his arrest. Now, Orta is refusing to eat prison food because he fears that officers are trying to poison him with rat poison.

The 22-year-old Orta was arrested shortly after recording the video of Garner’s killing. Police charged him with criminal possession of a weapon and he has been in prison since that time. Many suspect that Orta was a police target after the officers received negative backlash about the violent video.

Orta has spent the last eight months in prison and has refused to eat prison food for fear of police retribution. Orta’s suspicions may be justified, as multiple other inmates said they have found rat poison in their food.

According to the New York Post, the prison denied medical testing to 19 inmates even after they claimed to have found rat poison on their food. Rikers Island officials even reportedly admitted that the pellets were poison.

They did not comment on why rat poison was found in the inmates’ food.

Orta’s health is reportedly suffering because of malnourishment.

Danette Chavis, founder of National Action Against Police Brutality, told The Free Thought Project that Americans should not forget how Orta landed in jail in the first place. She claims that his arrest was unjustified and that he was targeted by police after his involvement in the video.

Orta is being held on $16,250 bail and cannot pay the amount to be released.
