Rachel Spry, a 35-year-old grandmother in Yuma, Arizona, was charged on Thursday for the death of her 3-year-old grandson who reportedly shot himself in the face with her handgun (video below).
According to the Yuma Sun, Spry was charged with reckless manslaughter, possession of dangerous drug, drug paraphernalia and a weapon in a drug offense. She is being held in jail on a $500K bond.
Court documents say that Spry had placed her 9mm handgun in a backpack and left it on top of a dryer while helping her daughter pack for a move on Wednesday.
She saw her grandson, Darrien Nez, come into the room where the backpack was sitting. Five minutes later, she heard a gunshot.
Her grandson was later pronounced dead at Yuma Regional Medical Center.
Court documents also claim that a methamphetamine pipe was found in the same backpack as the gun. Spry admitted to smoking meth the evening before the shooting occurred.
Spry’s Facebook page included a photo of a Smith & Wesson handgun with the caption “my best friend,” reports KYMA-TV.
