Quilt May Help Lead To Killer In 25-Year-Old Cold Murder Case Of Cathy Zimmer

Authorities have released a photo of a quilt that they hope will help them solve a 25-year-old murder.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office released the photo on Thursday; it is a key piece of evidence in the murder of 38-year-old Cathy Zimmer.

Zimmer was found dead in the backseat of her car in a San Jose airport parking lot on March 10, 1989. The mother of two had disappeared two days earlier after driving her kids to school, meeting up with a friend and attending college.

The six-by-four-foot quilt was found on top of her body.

“Cathy Zimmer was slain two-and-a-half decades ago, but her family has never forgotten her,” prosecutor Ted Kajani, head of the cold-case unit for the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. “We, too, have never forgotten her. We, too, have never given up on her case. We are asking the public to take a look at this quilt and call us if you know anything about it.”

When asked why it’s taken this long for the police to reach out to the public about the quilt, Kajani told the San Jose Mercury News detectives at the time wanted to hold back information that only the killer would know about, including “the method strangulation and the quilt.”

He hopes the photo will be seen by a much bigger audience thanks to social media.

Prosecutors say no one close to Zimmer has been able to identify the quilt.

Zimmer’s daughter, Debbie Lawrence, now 39, was a only a teenager when her mother disappeared. She said the family has been contacted by six or seven different detectives over the years. Her family remains hopeful.

“It’s wonderful,” Lawrence told the San Jose Mercury News. “I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that somebody might remember something.”

Anyone with information about the blanket or Zimmer’s death is asked to call investigator Michael Brown of the district attorney’s office at (408) 808-3760.
